Vicky Xu is a writer, investigative journalist, stand-up comedian, and mixed martial arts athlete.
Originally from China’s Gobi Desert, Vicky has held roles with the New York Times, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and the Australian Strategic Policy Institute. Her reporting on geopolitics and human rights issues related to China has been referenced in legislative discussions worldwide.
She is a regular presence in international media as a China expert and has performed stand-up comedy to sold-out audiences across Australia, where she holds citizenship. Her comedy uses absurdist humor to explore the possibility of lightness and laughter amidst repression and suffering.
Vicky’s work has faced strong backlash from China, with state media labeling her a “demon” and the Chinese security establishment issuing violent threats against her.
She is currently working on her memoir, You’re So Brave, while pursuing her goal of becoming a professional fighter in mixed martial arts.
